Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the nutritional content and the degradability of the dry matter and protein of fruits of Chloroleucon mangense and Acacia cochliacantha and of a 1:1 mixture of both, offered as supplements to Rambouillet sheep. In situ ruminal degradation was evaluated in three adult rams, fitted with a rumen cannula, with different incubation times of 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours. Protein intestinal degradability was quantified with a three-step procedure: in situ ruminal incubation, in vitro enzymatic digestion, and abomasal-intestinal digestion. The fruits of C. mangense and A. cochliacantha contain 21 and 12% crude protein, 47 and 56% neutral detergent fiber, 31 and 43% acid detergent fiber, and 0.9 and 6.0% condensed tannins, respectively. The fruits of C. mangense showed a higher nutritional value and a higher dry matter and crude protein degradability (p<0.05) than those of A. cochliacantha and the 1:1 mixture. The amount of protein that reaches the small intestine is higher for the 1:1, which is an indicative that its tannin concentration is enough to increase the bypass protein that can be absorbed in the small intestine.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o conteúdo nutricional e a degradabilidade da matéria seca e da proteína de frutos de Cloroleucon mangense e Acacia cochliacantha e de uma mistura 1:1 de ambos, oferecidos como suplementos para carneiros Rambouillet. Foi avaliada a degradação ruminal in situ em três carneiros adultos, com colocação de uma cânula ruminal, com diferentes tempos de incubação de 0, 6, 12, 24, 48 e 72 horas. A degradação intestinal da proteína foi quantificada por meio de procedimento com três etapas: incubação ruminal in situ, digestão enzimática in vitro e digestão abomasal intestinal. Os frutos de C. mangense e A. cochliacantha contêm 21% e 12% de proteína bruta, 47% e 56% de fibra em detergente neutro, 31 e 43% de fibra em detergente ácido e 0,9 e 6,0% de taninos condensados, respectivamente. Os frutos de C. mangense apresentaram valor nutricional edegradabilidade da matéria seca e da proteína bruta (p<0,05) maiores que os de A. cochliacantha e da mistura 1:1. A quantidade de proteína que chega ao intestino delgado é maior para a mistura 1:1, o que é indicativo de que sua concentração de tanino é suficiente para aumentar a proteína não degradável no rúmen absorvida no intestino delgado.

Resumen: El pastoreo racional Voisin (PRV) promueve el manejo armonioso del ganado, las plantas, el agua y el suelo, lo cual puede inducir cambios positivos en las propiedades de los suelos degradados por la práctica del pastoreo extensivo. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar los cambios en las propiedades fisicoquímicas y biológicas del suelo, perdidas por la práctica del pastoreo extensivo, mediante la implementación del PRV en dos ambientes de pastoreo. Se seleccionaron dos potreros dominados por vegetación secundaria (VegSec) de selva baja y dos monocultivos (MonGra) de Hyparrhenia rufa (todos sujetos a pastoreo extensivo). Un potrero de cada ambiente continuó bajo pastoreo extensivo (14 meses) y en los otros dos se implementó el PRV (14 meses). Se tomaron muestras de suelo y hojarasca al inicio y al final del periodo de estudio. Algunas propiedades físicas y químicas variaron por efecto del momento de muestreo (P < 0.05), al final del periodo, la densidad aparente (DA), nitrógeno total (NT), materia orgánica (MO) y carbono orgánico (CO) mejoraron mientras que potasio disponible (K) aumentó marginalmente. Hubo efecto del manejo anidado en ambiente de pastoreo (P< 0.05); en VegSec, DA (P < 0.05) y P disponible (P< 0.05) mejoraron con PRV y permanecieron igual en MonGra; en MonGra, la MO (P < 0.05) y CO (P< 0.05) aumentaron solo con pastoreo extensivo (P < 0.05). La abundancia relativa y riqueza de morfoespecies de fauna edáfica se incrementaron con PRV en ambos ambientes de pastoreo (P < 0.05), donde dominó el orden Isóptera. Se concluye que a 14 meses de implementado el PRV, algunas propiedades físicas, químicas y biológicas del suelo empiezan a regenerarse.

Summary: Voisin Grazing (VG) promotes harmonized management of livestock, plants, water and soil, inducing positive changes in soil properties that have been lost due to extensive grazing management. Thus, the objective of this research is to assess some physical-chemical and biological properties of soils undergoing extensive grazing by implementing VG in two grazing environments. Two paddocks dominated by dry forest early secondary vegetation (SecVeg) and two paddocks dominated by Hyparrhenia rufa (GraMon) were chosen (all sites undergoing extensive grazing). One paddock from each environment continued under extensive grazing (14 months) while VG was implemented in the other paddocks (14 months). Soil and litter samples were collected at the beginning and end of the study. Some physical and chemical properties varied due to the sampling time (P < 0.05). Bulk density (BD), total nitrogen (TN), organic matter (OM) and organic carbon (OC) improved at the end of the study, while available potassium (K) marginally increased. Soil properties also varied because of the management nested in grazing environment (P < 0.05). In SecVeg, BD (P < 0.05) and available P (P < 0.05) improved with VG, but remained the same in GraMon. In GraMon, OM (P < 0.05) and OC (P < 0.05) increased only with extensive grazing (P < 0.05). Macrofauna morphospecies abundance and richness increased with VG in both grazing environments (P < 0.05), where the order Isoptera dominated. After 14 months of implementing VG, some physical, chemical, and biological soil properties had begun to regenerate.

Resumen: Los árboles dispersos en pastizales son una fuente importante de nutrientes, reciclados a través de la hojarasca que los árboles liberan anualmente. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la descomposición y liberación de nutrientes de la hojarasca de Vachellia pennatula y Lysiloma acapulcense, en un clima cálido subhúmedo. Se colocaron bolsas de descomposición y se monitoreó la humedad del suelo y temperatura ambiental bajo el dosel de los árboles y en áreas abiertas durante 32 semanas. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques al azar y se modeló la descomposición de hojarasca en cuatro tratamientos: sombra de L. acapulcense con hojarasca de L. acapulcense (1) o de V. pennatula (2); sombra de V. Pennatula con hojarasca de L. acapulcense (3) o de V. pennatula (4). Se determinó la composición química de la hojarasca. Los parámetros de calidad evaluados (relación C/N, lignina, celulosa y hemicelulosa) fueron buenos predictores del proceso de descomposición. La hojarasca remanente a las 32 semanas fue similar en todos los tratamientos (P = 0.999). En el proceso de descomposición, la constante (k) osciló entre -0.00090 y -0.00096, que denota lenta descomposición (t50 = 1.98-2.11 años, t99 = 13.2-14.0 años). El nitrógeno y el fósforo aumentaron al final del experimento debido a la probable inmovilización de estos nutrimentos por microorganismos asociados (hongos y bacterias). La descomposición y liberación de nutrientes de la hojarasca de V. pennatula y L. acapulcense en este ambiente cálido subhúmedo es relativamente lenta, independientemente del microclima generado por la sombra.

Abstract Scattered trees in pastures are an important source of nutrients recycled through leaf litter released annually. The objective was to assess the decomposition and nutrient release by leaf litter from Vachellia pennatula and Lysiloma acapulcense in a sub-humid warm climate Decomposition litterbags were set under the canopies and then collected, and soil humidity and temperatura were measured over a 32-week period. A randomized block design was used, and litter decomposition was modeled in four treatments: litter from L. acapulcense under shade from L. acapulcense (1), litter from V. pennatula under shade from L. acapulcense (2), litter from L. acapulcense under shade from V. pennatula (3), and litter from V. pennatula under shade from V. pennatula (4). Chemical composition of leaf litter was assessed. Chemical composition of leaf litter was assessed. Chemical composition variables evaluated (C/N ratio, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose) were good predictors of decomposition. Remnant leaf litter at 32 weeks was similar in all treatments (P = 0.999). The decomposition rate (k) ranged from -0.00090 to -0.00096 across treatments, showing a low decomposition rate (t50 = 1.98-2.11 yr, t99 = 13.2-14.0 yr), where only litter fragmentation took place during the 32-week period, across decomposition conditions. Nitrogen and P increased at the end of the study suggesting nutrient sequestration by microorganisms (e.g. fungi and bacteria) associated with the litter during the study period. Litter decomposition and nutrient release from these tree species which have a high C/N ratio are relatively slow under sub-humid warm climate conditions.

Resumen Se determinó producción, calidad nutritiva y preferencia de T. diversifolia por ovinos Pelibuey a diferentes edades, en tres épocas del año. Se midió la producción de materia seca (MS) y calidad nutritiva de forraje cada 14 días, desde el corte hasta 84 días de edad. Se tomaron muestras de hoja y tallo para determinar proteína cruda (PC), fibra detergente neutro (FDN) y fibra detergente ácida (FDA). Se utilizaron ocho ovinos Pelibuey adultos para determinar su preferencia por el follaje de T. diversifolia a los 42, 56 y 70 días de rebrote. La producción de MS total fue similar en otoño e invierno y ambas mayores que primavera. En otoño a los 56 días y en invierno a los 70 días después del corte, la producción de MS fue 9 t ha-1, mientras que en primavera a los 84 días fue cercana a las 3 t ha-1. El incremento o decremento de los componentes morfológicos de la biomasa a través del tiempo fue distinto entre las épocas evaluadas y mostró un comportamiento curvilíneo en el tiempo, dentro de cada época. La PC aumentó en forma lineal con la edad de corte. En otoño e invierno hubo mayor porcentaje de FDN y FDA. Las plantas de 42 días tuvieron menor porcentaje de FDA. El rendimiento de MS y la calidad nutritiva de T. diversifolia difiere según la época del año y la edad de rebrote. La edad de corte de la planta afectó su preferencia por los ovinos Pelibuey (P=0.0091), fue mayor por el follaje de 42 días, seguido por 56 y 70 días.

Abstract Production, nutritional quality and preference of T. diversifolia by Pelibuey sheep was determined, at different ages, in three seasons of the year. Dry matter (DM) production and nutritional quality of forage were measured every 14 d, from the cut to 84 d of age. Leaf and stem samples were taken to determine crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF). Eight adult Pelibuey sheep were used to determine their preference for T. diversifolia foliage at 42, 56 and 70 d of regrowth. Total DM production was similar in autumn and winter and both greater than spring. In autumn at 56 d and in winter at 70 d after the cut, the production of DM was 9 t ha-1, while in S at 84 d, it was close to 3 t ha-1. The increase or decrease of the morphological components of the biomass over time was different between the seasons evaluated and showed a curvilinear behavior over time, within each season. CP increased linearly with the cutting age. In autumn and winter, there was a higher percentage of NDF and ADF. The 42-d plants had a lower percentage of ADF. The yield of DM and the nutritional quality of T. diversifolia differs depending on the season of year and the age of regrowth. The cutting age of the plant affected its preference by Pelibuey sheep (P=0.0091), it was higher for the foliage of 42 d, followed by 56 and 70 d.

Abstract Introduction: Scattered trees from tropical dry forests (TDF) deposit significant amounts of leaf litter into pasture soils. Objective: To estimate the litterfall production during the dry season by scattered Lysiloma acapulcense (Kunth) Benth. and Vachellia pennatula (Schltdl. & Cham.) Seigler & Ebinger trees in pastures. Materials and methods: Ten scattered trees of each species were selected from a 10-ha pasture, and litter was collected during the dry season (November to May) and sorted into fractions. Leaf litter biomass, nitrogen (N) and lignin (L) content, and the lignin-nitrogen (L/N) ratio were assessed. Leaf litterfall was modelled over an annual cycle using a double logistic model. Means from all variables were compared between species using a t-test. Results and discussion: Litter, nitrogen and lignin content were similar between species. However, the L/N ratio was significantly higher (P < 0.0001) in L. acapulcense (32.1) than in V. pennatula (21.3). The leaf litter model showed that the defoliation phase of L. acapulcense lasted 30 days longer than that of V. pennatula. Conclusion: The quantity and quality of leaf litter that scattered trees deposit in a pasture encourages the adoption of agroforestry systems, including tree species native to TDF.

Resumen Introducción: Los árboles dispersos del bosque tropical seco (BTS) depositan una cantidad significativa de hojarasca en suelos de los pastizales. Objetivo: Estimar la producción de hojarasca de árboles dispersos de Lysiloma acapulcense (Kunth) Benth. y Vachellia pennatula (Schltdl. & Cham.) Seigler & Ebinger en pastizales, durante la estación seca. Materiales y métodos: Se recolectó la hojarasca de 10 árboles dispersos de cada especie en un pastizal de 10 ha, durante el periodo de senescencia de las hojas (noviembre a mayo). La cantidad de hojarasca se evaluó y se separó en componentes para determinar el contenido de nitrógeno (N) y lignina (L), y la proporción L/N. La caída de hojas se analizó con un modelo logístico doble. Las medias de las variables se compararon entre especies mediante una prueba t de Student. Resultados y discusión: La cantidad de hojarasca y los contenidos de N y L no difirieron entre especies (P > 0.05), mientras que la proporción L/N fue mayor en L. acapulcense (32.1) que en V. pennatula (21.3). La fase de defoliación de L. acapulcense es más larga que la de V. pennatula. Conclusión: Es importante conocer la cantidad y la calidad de la hojarasca que los árboles dispersos aportan en los pastizales para ayudar a la adopción de sistemas agroforestales, que incluyan especies nativas del BTS.

Abstract The biomass and nutritional value of Leucaena leucocephala cv. Cunningham (5,000 trees ha-1) and Megathyrsus maximus cv. Tanzania was assessed in a silvopastoral system in a tropical hot sub-humid climate in the rainy and dry seasons. Samplings were done from August-October 2014 (rainy) and March-April 2015 (dry). The treatments were harvests at 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-d intervals in both seasons, randomly assigned to twelve (24 m2) paddocks. The grass accounted for most of the total available forage in the silvopastoral system (80 vs 20 %). In both seasons, the association yielded more forage at the 50-d interval (5,300 kg DM ha-1 in the rainy season and 1,620 kg DM ha-1 in the dry season) (P<0.05). During the rainy season, crude protein (CP) in the tree forage was higher at the 50-d interval (22 %; P<0.05), but did not change over the intervals during the dry season (28 %; P>0.05); neutral detergent fiber (NDF) did not change over time (44 %; P>0.05) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) increased in the 50-d interval (25 %, P<0.05) but in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) decreased (49 %; P<0.05), regardless of season. Crude protein (10%; P<0.001) and IVDMD (58 %; P<0.03) of M. maximus remained high from the 20- to 40-d intervals, although in both seasons NDF and ADF fractions significantly increased after the 40-d interval. The evaluated silvopastoral system attains highest yield between the 40- and 50-d intervals. The highest nutritional quality of M. maximus was at 40 ds, after which the nutritional quality of L. leucocephala may compensate for the lost nutritional quality of the grass, regardless of season.

Resumen Se determinó el rendimiento y calidad del forraje en un sistema silvopastoril con Leucaena leucocephala cv. Cunningham (5,000 árboles ha-1) asociado con Megathyrsus maximus cv. Tanzania, en cuatro intervalos de descanso (20, 30, 40 y 50 días), en dos épocas (lluvias y seca) en clima cálido subhúmedo. Los tratamientos se distribuyeron aleatoriamente a las unidades experimentales (12 parcelas, 24 m2 c/u) y se evaluó el rendimiento y calidad nutritiva del forraje en la época húmeda (agosto-octubre, 2014) y seca (marzo-abril, 2015). La gramínea aportó la mayor proporción de forraje a la biomasa disponible (80 vs 20 %) y se produjo más biomasa total a 50 días en lluvias (5,300 kg MS ha-1) y seca (1,620 kg MS ha-1); en lluvias, la proteína cruda (PC) de los arboles aumentó gradualmente a 22 % (P<0.05) hasta 50 días, y en seca fue similar entre intervalos (28 %) (P>0.05); fibra detergente neutro (FDN) se mantuvo (44 %) (P>0.05) y fibra detergente ácido (FDA) aumentó (25 %) (P<0.05) a 50 días, mientras digestibilidad in vitro de la materia seca (DIVMS) disminuyó (49 %) (P<0.05). En la gramínea, la PC (10 %) (P<0.001) y DIVMS (58 %) se mantuvieron hasta 40 días y después declinaron (P<0.03), aunque FDN y FDA aumentaron significativamente a 50 días, en ambas épocas. la asociación L. leucocephala y M. maximus, alcanza su mayor producción entre 40-50 días, con mejor calidad nutritiva de la gramínea a 40 días, que se puede compensar con el valor nutritivo del follaje de los árboles hasta los 50 días de descanso, independientemente de la época.

Abstract: The relationship between abundance, dominance and similarity of fodder species with the nutritional quality and quantity of potential phytomass for feeding bovines was determined, in sites with forest, shrub and herbaceous vegetation in dry and rain season. Fifty-four (54) fodder species were found grouped into 21 families (with Fabacea dominating). The abundance of woody fodder was higher in the rain season in the forest community (p<0.0001; 52.8±11.4) and in the dry season in the shrub community (p=0.002; 14.80±3.09). The similarity between communities varied from 0.27 to 0.54. The dominating fodder species of the forest community in the rain season presented high nutritional values, ruminal degradability (65.9-89.0 %) and metabolizable energy (9.35-11.52 MJ/kg DM). The highest content of tannins was in Bauhinia divaricata (12.75 %). The potential phytomass yielded 3272 and 1454 kg DM/ha in the rain and dry seasons, respectively, and was higher in herbs (P<0.0001; 3977±2299 and 2451±3336, respectively). A large diversity of fodder species was found, different in each plant community, and which differ in chemical-nutritional quality. As a whole, the potential phytomass of all the strata and the variety of nutrients that the species contain complement each other to feed bovines throughout the year.

Resumen: Se determinó la relación entre abundancia, dominancia y similitud de especies forrajeras con la calidad nutritiva y cantidad de fitomasa potencial para la alimentación de bovinos en sitios con vegetación forestal, arbustiva y herbácea en la época seca y la lluvia. Se encontraron 54 especies forrajeras agrupadas en 21 familias (dominando Fabacea). La abundancia de leñosas forrajeras fue mayor en temporada de lluvias en la comunidad forestal (p<0.0001; 52.8±11.4) y en la de secas en la arbustiva (p=0.002; 14.80±3.09). La similitud entre comunidades varió de 0.27 a 0.54. Las especies forrajeras dominantes de la comunidad forestal en lluvias presentaron altos valores nutricionales, degradabilidad ruminal (65.9-89.0 %) y energía metabolizable (9.35-11.52 MJ/kg MS). El mayor contenido de taninos fue en Bauhinia divaricata (12.75 %). La fitomasa potencial rindió 3272 y 1454 kg MS/ha en lluvias y secas, respectivamente, y fue mayor en herbáceas (P<0.0001; 3977±2299 y 2451±3336, respectivamente). Se encontró una gran diversidad de especies forrajeras, diferentes en cada comunidad vegetal, y que difieren en calidad químico-nutritiva. En su conjunto, la fitomasa potencial de todos los estratos y la variedad de nutrientes que las especies contienen se complementan para alimentar bovinos a lo largo del año.

Abstract: This paper describes a study of the phenology and tree architecture of Calyptranthes schiedeana, Lysiloma acapulcense and Tabebuia chrysantha, species of the low deciduous forest with a cultural importance and a potential for agroforestry. Ten trees of each of these taxa dispersed within the agroecosystems of veracruz, Mexico, were selected, and their phenology was observed every 14 days (from February 2014 to March 2015). Changes occurred in: 1) the development of floral buds, 2) flowering, 3) fruiting, 4) seed dispersal, 5) presence, 6) fall, and 7) shooting of leaves, all of them related to temperature and precipitation. In March 2014 the tree architecture was assessed, and the type of growth was determined. The phenology of the taxa was characteristic of the low deciduous forest, although L. acapulcense tended to keep its leaves for a longer time and to fruit with lower levels of soil moisture. C. schiedeana required precipitation in order to form leave buds (r = 0.60, P = 0.0004), while the development of these dependend on the decrease of temperature (r = 0.58, P = 0.0008). Fruiting in L. acapulcense diminished gradually with lower temperatures (r = -0.90, P < 0.0001); this species was also prominent for its higher, larger crown with longer branches; besides, it adopted the Troll growth model, while T. chrysantha exhibited the Leeuwenberg model, and C. schiedeana, the Attims model. It is concluded that the three species have different phenologic patterns and architectural models, but they can all adapt to agroforestry systems by being associated to crops.

Resumen: Se estudió la fenología y arquitectura de Calyptranthes schiedeana, Lysiloma acapulcense y Tabebuia chrysantha, especies de selva baja caducifolia, con importancia cultural y potencial para la agroforestería. Se seleccionaron 10 árboles de cada taxón dispersos dentro de agroecosistemas de veracruz, México; y se observó su fenología con una periodicidad de 14 días (febrero 2014-marzo 2015). Se registraron cambios en: 1) formación de yemas florales, 2) floración, 3) fructificación, 4) dispersión de semillas, 5) presencia, 6) caída, y 7) brote de hojas; los cuales se relacionaron con la temperatura y precipitación. En marzo del 2014 se evaluó la arquitectura arbórea y se definió el tipo de crecimiento. La fenología de los taxa correspondió con la característica de selva baja caducifolia; aunque L. acapulcense tendió a mantener hojas durante mayor tiempo y fructificar cuando la humedad en el suelo fue menor. C. schiedeana requirió de precipitación para desarrollar yemas foliares (r = 0.60, P = 0.0004); mientras que su formación en T. chrysantha dependió del descenso en la temperatura (r = 0.58, P = 0.0008). La fructificación en L. acapulcense fue disminuyendo con temperaturas bajas (r = -0.90, P < 0.0001), esta última también destacó por su copa situada a mayor altura (P < 0.0001 ), más grande (P < 0.0001) y con ramas más largas (P < 0.0001); además, adoptó el modelo de crecimiento Troll; T. chrysantha presentó el modelo Leeuwenberg y C. schiedeana el de Attims. Se concluye que las tres especies tienen distintos patrones fenológicos y modelos arquitectónicos, pero pueden adaptarse a sistemas agroforestales asociándolos a cultivos.

Abstract: The food security of a rural family and of a country is linked to agricultural and livestock activities, and these must be carried out in equilibrium to reach sustainable development; this includes an adequate management of the energetic, economic and environmental resource within the Agroecosystem (AES). The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between efficient use of energy, economic efficiency, productivity of agroecosystems, auto-consumption, and the line of minimum family welfare in the municipality of Paso de Ovejas. The production costs and income were calculated for each agricultural/livestock activity in the AES and then the indexes of economic efficiency and energy use were determined. The cultivation of sugar cane showed low productivity; however, this crop contributes 0.61±0.42 of the coverage proportion of the line of minimum welfare, as a result from the incentives that the sugar plant offers sugar cane producers. Of maize production in the hill zone, 15 % is used for human autoconsumption and 16 % for animals. Only the milk in liquid or transformed (cheese) form participates in auto-consumption, for which 4 % of the production in the irrigation zone and 5 % in the hill zone are destined. The agroecosystems with greater surface and with irrigation capacity are directed at crop sowing of high energetic yields, such as sugar cane in combination with cattle breeding to improve economic efficiency. This productive activity allows the rural family to afford temporary financial situations, since it functions as family saving, concluding that the producers implement combinations of productive activities in their agroecosystems, according to the availability of natural and financial resources, achieving differentiated coverages with regards to the line of minimum welfare.

Resumen: La seguridad alimentaria de una familia rural y de un país está ligada a las actividades agropecuarias, y deben efectuarse en equilibrio para alcanzar un desarrollo sustentable; esto incluye el adecuado manejo del recurso energético, económico y medioambiental dentro del Agroecosistema (AES). El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la relación entre el uso eficiente de la energía, la eficiencia económica, la productividad de los agroecosistemas, el autoconsumo y la línea de bienestar mínimo familiar en el municipio Paso de Ovejas. Se calcularon los costos de producción e ingresos para cada actividad agropecuaria en el AES y posteriormente se determinaron los índices de eficiencia económica y de uso de la energía. El cultivo de caña de azúcar mostró baja productividad; sin embargo, este cultivo contribuye con 0.61±0.42 de la proporción de cobertura de la línea de bienestar mínimo, como resultado de los incentivos que el ingenio les ofrece a los productores de caña. El 15 % de la producción de maíz en la zona de lomeríos es utilizado para autoconsumo humano y 16 % para el de animales. Sólo la leche en forma líquida o transformada (queso) participa en el autoconsumo, destinando para ello 4 % de la producción en la zona de riego y 5 % en lomerío. Los agroecosistemas con mayor superficie y con capacidad de riego son orientados a la siembra de cultivos de altos rendimientos energéticos, como la caña de azúcar en combinación con la cría de ganado bovino para mejorar la eficiencia económica. Esta actividad productiva permite a la familia rural solventar situaciones económicas coyunturales, ya que funciona como un ahorro familiar, concluyéndose que los productores implementan combinaciones de actividades productivas en sus agroecosistemas, de acuerdo con la disponibilidad de recursos naturales y económicos, logrando coberturas diferenciadas en relación con la línea de bienestar mínimo.

The high energetic costs and the low productivity of some agroecosystems (AES) at a global level pose the challenge of suggesting strategies for its redesign. To this end, it is necessary to know the relations between the operative, productive, and financial structures of the agricultural components (AC) that comprise the AES. The objective of this study was to evaluate the energetic-economic flow as a tool to typify the AES based on their productive, economic, and energetic efficiencies and their agricultural diversity index. The data of a survey answered by agricultural producers of the municipality of Paso de Ovejas, Veracruz, Mexico had multivariate analysis techniques applied in order to differentiate the types of AES: hierarchical agglomerative grouping and k-media, ANVAR and means tests (Tukey; p<0.05). Three types of AES were identified: Entrepreneurial (E), Transitional Diversified (TD), and Traditional (T), with frequencies of 37, 17, and 46 %, respectively. Type E had the most efficient energetic-economic balance and the lowest diversity, predominantly due to the production of sugar cane. Type TD showed a greater total income and agricultural diversity by predominantly managing a combination of corn (C) and cattle farming (CF). Type T was found in the low hills area, with a low energetic-economic balance as a result of the low productivity of its AC (C and CF). In conclusion, the energetic-economic efficiency of the AES depends on the combination of the agricultural components that comprise them, product design of the producers, objectives and the agro-ecologica I characteristics of where they are found.

Los altos costos energéticos y la baja productividad de algunos agroecosistemas (AES) a nivel mundial plantean el reto de proponer estrategias para su rediseño. Para ello, es necesario conocer las relaciones de las estructuras operativas, productivas y financieras de los componentes agropecuarios (CA) que los forman. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el flujo energético-económico como herramienta para tipificar los AES, con base en su eficiencia de productividad, económica, energética y su índice de diversidad agrícola. Se aplicó una encuesta a productores agropecuarios del municipio de Paso de Ovejas, Veracruz, México, se realizaron técnicas de análisis multivariado para diferenciar los tipos de AES: agrupación jerárquica aglomerativa y k-media, ANAVAR y prueba de medias (Tukey; p<0.05). Se identificaron tres tipos de AES: el empresarial (E), transicional diversificado (TD) y tradicional (T), con frecuencias de 37, 17 y 46 %, respectivamente. El tipo E mostró el mejor balance energético-económico y la menor diversidad, debido a que depende principalmente de la caña de azúcar. El TD presentó mayor ingreso total y diversidad agrícola, al manejar en su mayoría una combinación de maíz (M) y ganadería bovina (GB). El T se ubicó en la zona de lomerío, con bajo balance energético-económico, resultado de la baja productividad de sus CA (M y GB). En conclusión, la eficiencia energética-económica de los AES depende de la combinación de los componentes agropecuarios que los conforman, resultado del diseño de los productores, de sus objetivos y de las características agroecológicas de donde se localizan.

Abstract The adapting process of agriculture to the effects of climate change is inherently sociocultural; however, studies from this dimension still consider an emerging frontier of knowledge. Currently, most of the knowledge generated comes from the natural sciences and has been fundamental in understanding the behavior of major agro-climatic variables, their impact on base resources needed for agricultural activity and its effect on crop development. The objective of this research note, was to explore what is the social responsibility of science in agriculture adaption, especially when scientific work is influenced by global agenda led by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Agency where converge academic, economic and political interests that lead to an agenda characterized by its predominantly positivist epistemological approach, which is a limiting factor in the design of strategies for adaptation aimed towards those whose way of live and identity is agriculture. This is a vital matter for the design and strengthening of strategies developed by producers autonomously, whose rationality for some decision makers is dissimilar and laughable. Studies on the adaptation of agriculture to climate change from a cultural point of view is an opportunity to address other theoretical conceptual perspectives, which underlies an epistemological approach aimed towards holistic understanding of the phenomenon, thereby generating knowledge that allows to reflect to whom, why and how to lead the adaptation of agriculture.

Resumen El proceso de adaptación de la agricultura ante los efectos del cambio climático es inherentemente sociocultural; sin embargo, los estudios desde esta dimensión aún se consideran una frontera emergente del conocimiento. Actualmente la mayor parte del conocimiento generado proviene de las ciencias naturales y ha sido fundamental para comprender el comportamiento de las principales variables agroclimáticas, su impacto en la base de recursos necesarios para la actividad agrícola y su efecto en el desarrollo de los cultivos. El objetivo de esta nota de investigación, fue explorar cuál es la responsabilidad social de la ciencia en la adaptación de la agricultura, sobre todo, cuando el quehacer científico está influenciado por una agenda a nivel global liderada por el Panel Intergubernamental sobre el Cambio Climático (IPCC). Organismo en donde convergen intereses académicos, económicos y políticos que conducen a una agenda caracterizada por su enfoque epistemológico predominantemente positivista, el cual resulta una limitante en el diseño de estrategias para la adaptación dirigidas hacia quienes tienen como sustento de vida e identidad a la agricultura. Éste es un asunto toral para el diseño y el fortalecimiento de estrategias desarrolladas por los productores de manera autónoma, cuya racionalidad resulta para algunos tomadores de decisiones como disímil e irrisoria. Los estudios en la adaptación de la agricultura ante el cambio climático desde la dimensión sociocultural son una oportunidad para abordar otras perspectivas teórico conceptuales, a las cuales subyazca un enfoque epistemológico encaminado hacia una comprensión holística del fenómeno, de ese modo se generará conocimiento que permita reflexionar hacia quienes, para qué y cómo debe dirigirse la adaptación de la agricultura.

Luhmann constructs a systemic and large scale functional theory based on concepts previously conceived by classical and contemporary authors of sociology and other areas of knowledge. This conceptual theoretical framework has been used in this experiment to construct an approximation of Mexican agricultural reality. This required an assembly between communication systems and agro-ecosystem, the latter as a conceptual model of autopoiesis recipient of the "subsistence production", "production in transition" and "business production" through structural couplings systems with the systems of conscience that from an agroecological approach are the drivers of the agroecosystem; i.e. subsistence producers, in transition and businessmen, actors responsible for the diachronic and differentiated transformation of management practices that characterize them.

Luhmann construye una teoría sistémica y funcional de gran envergadura, basada en conceptos concebidos anteriormente por autores clásicos y contemporáneos de la sociología y de otras áreas del conocimiento. Este andamiaje teórico conceptual ha sido utilizado en el presente ensayo para construir una aproximación de la realidad agrícola mexicana. Lo anterior requirió de un ensamblaje entre sistemas de comunicación y agroecosistema, este último como un modelo conceptual receptor de la autopoiesis de los sistemas denominados "producción de subsistencia", "producción en transición" y "producción empresarial" a través de los acoplamientos estructurales con los sistemas de conciencia, que desde el enfoque agroecológico son los controladores del agroecosistema; es decir, productores de subsistencia, en transición y empresarios, actores responsables de la transformación diacrónica y diferenciada de las prácticas de manejo que les caracterizan.

Se estudió el efecto del amamantamiento retrasado sobre la ganancia de peso pre-destete (GDP) y consumo de leche (CL) de becerros, así como el efecto en la duración del periodo parto-primera ovulación (IPPO), número total de folículos (NTF), diámetro (DF), tamaño (TF) y tasa de crecimiento (TC) del folículo de mayor tamaño, producción de leche (PL) y cambios de peso corporal (CPC) de las vacas durante 100 días posparto. Treinta vacas con su becerro en un sistema de doble propósito fueron repartidas aleatoriamente en tres modalidades de amamantamiento: tradicional (AT), controlado (LC) y retrasado (AR). Las vacas en AT y AR fueron ordeñadas a fondo en los cuatro cuartos de la ubre y a las vacas en LC solo se ordeñaron tres. Terminado el ordeño, los becerros en AT permanecieron con su madre por 8h, mientras que en LC y AR lo hicieron por 30min u 8h postordeño, respectivamente, antes de separarlos. La GDP fue similar en AR y AT (p<0,05), ambos mayores que LC (p<0,05). El CL fue mayor en AR que LC (p<0,05). El porcentaje de ovulaciones dentro de los primeros 100 días fue similar entre LC y AR (p>0,05) pero menor que AT (p<0,05). Los tratamientos no afectaron el comportamiento de las madres (p>0,05) excepto para PL total. Las vacas AR produjeron 3,2kg/día de leche más que LC (p<0,01). Retrasar el amamantamiento por 8h postordeño y limitarlo a 30min/día no reduce el anestro posparto, pero mejora el crecimiento de los becerros e incrementa la producción total de leche de las vacas.

The pourpose of this study was to estimate the effects of delayed suckling on daily weight gain (GDP) and milk intake (CL) of calves before weaning, as well as time from parturition to the next ovulation (IPPO), total follicle number (NTF), follicle diameter (DF), size (TF) and growth rate (TC) of the largest follicle, milk yield (PL) and change in live weight (CPC) of cows during 100 days after parturition. Thirty cow and calf pairs from a dual purpose system were distributed randomly to three suckling treatments: traditional (AT), restricted (LC) and delayed (AR). Cows in AT and AR were completely milked, while only three udders were milked in LC cows. After milking, calves in AT stayed with their mothers for 8h, while calves in LC and AR were allowed to nurse for 30min or 8h after milking, respectively, before being isolated. The GDP of calves was similar in AR and AT (p<0.05), but greater than that for LC (p<0.05). Milk intake was greater in AR than in LC (p<0.05). Similar proportions of cows ovulated within 100 days from parturition in groups LC and AR (P>0.05), but fewer did in group AT (P<0.05). The treatments did not affect cow responses (P>0.05) except for total PL. Cows in AR produced 3,2kg/day more milk than LC (P<0.05). Delaying suckling for 8h after milking and restricting nursing to 30min/day does not reduce postpartum anoestrus, but improves calf growth and increases total milk yield in cows.

Estudou-se o efeito da amamentação retardada sobre o ganho de peso pré-desmame (GDP) e consumo de leite (CL) de bezerros, assim como o efeito na duração do período parto-primeira ovulação (IPPO), número total de folículos (NTF), diâmetro (DF), tamanho (TF) e taxa de crescimento (TC) do folículo de maior tamanho, produção de leite (PL) e mudança de peso corporal (MPC) das vacas durante 100 dias pós-parto. Trinta vacas com seus bezerros em um sistema de duplo propósito foram repartidos aleatoriamente em três modalidades de amamentação: tradicional (AT), controlada (LC) e retardada (AR). As vacas em AT e AR foram ordenhadas intensivamente nos quatro quartos do ubre e às vacas em LC somente se ordenharam três. Terminada a ordenha, os bezerros em AT permaneceram com sua mãe por 8hs, enquanto que em LC e AR o fizeram por 30 min ou 8hs pós-ordenha, respectivamente, antes de separá-los. O GDP foi similar em AR e AT (p<0,05), ambos maiores que LC (p<0,05). O CL foi maior em AR que LC (p<0,05). A porcentagem de ovulações dentro dos primeiros 100 dias foi similar entre LC e AR (p>0,05) mas menor que AT (p<0,05). Os tratamentos não afetaram o comportamento das mães (p>0,05) exceto para PL total. As vacas AR produziram 3,2kg/dia de leite mais que LC (p<0,01). Atrasar em 8hs a amamentação pós-ordenha e limitá-la a 30 min/dia não reduz o anestro pós-parto, mas melhora o crescimento dos bezerros e incrementa a produção total de leite das vacas.
